Quick answer

If you work in Cyprus, as an employee or as a self-employed person, you belong in the Cyprus social insurance system, and the EU rule for migrant workers is that you register with the social security system of the country you work in3. Who does the registering depends on which side of the desk you sit. An employer must be registered in the Register of Employers of the Social Insurance Services before recruiting anyone, and must declare each new recruitment through the ERGANI electronic system no later than one day before the employment starts1. You, the worker, need your own social insurance number, and a self-employed person must register themselves; both use the same application form, YKA 1-00812. The number is the key that everything else turns on: contributions, benefits, and later the five-year records that other applications ask for. Get it early.

Step-by-step

1. Sort the residence paperwork first. The registration form asks for identification, and for a foreign national that means a copy of your ID card, passport or alien registration certificate1. If you are an EU citizen and have not registered your residence yet, start with our [Yellow Slip guide](/guides/yellow-slip-meu1). 2. Get your social insurance number with form YKA 1-008. The form is published by the Social Insurance Services in a bilingual Greek and English version2. It is submitted to your local District Social Insurance Office, by hand or by post, and the number is usually issued within one to two weeks1. 3. If you are an employee, make sure your employer has done their half. The employer registers as an employer with form YKA 01-001 before recruiting personnel, and declares your recruitment exclusively through ERGANI, at the latest one day before you start1. If a new employer waves this away, that is a warning sign about how the rest of your employment will be run. 4. If you are self-employed, you are your own employer. You submit the YKA 1-008 registration yourself at the district office12. There is no company to do it for you, and no automatic enrolment when you invoice your first client. 5. Line up the tax side in parallel. Working here also means registering yourself in the Tax Registry, an application submitted only electronically through the Tax For All portal, and nobody files it for you4. Our [tax registration guide](/guides/tax-identification-number) walks through that sequence. 6. Start paying on the right rhythm. Employers pay the contributions for each month by the end of the following calendar month1. Self-employed contributions are paid every three months1.

Costs and deadlines

Social insurance in Cyprus is priced as percentages of insurable earnings, not as flat fees. Employees. The total contribution on an employee's insurable earnings is 22.8 percent, split three ways: 8.8 percent from the employee, 8.8 percent from the employer, and 5.2 percent from the state1. Your own share is withheld from your salary; you do not pay it separately. Employers on top of that. An employer also contributes 1.2 percent to the Redundancy Fund, 0.5 percent to the Human Resources Development Fund and 2 percent to the Social Cohesion Fund1. Self-employed. The total is 21.8 percent of insurable income, of which the self-employed person pays 16.6 percent and the state 5.2 percent1. Voluntary contributors. People continuing their insurance voluntarily pay 15 percent, with the state adding 4.7 percent, a total of 19.7 percent1. Deadlines. Employer contributions for a given month are due by the end of the calendar month that follows it1. Self-employed contributions run on a three-month cycle1. Payments can be made online through the service linked from the Social Insurance Services site2. We are deliberately not quoting the insurable earnings floors and ceilings here. They are updated on the Social Insurance Services pages, and the self-employed minimums vary by occupational category, so read the current figures there rather than a number that was true when this page was written2.

Common mistakes

Registering here when you should not. A posted worker sent temporarily to another EU country can remain covered by the home country's system, proven with a PD A1 form, which is issued for a maximum of 24 months3. If your employer posted you to Cyprus with an A1, joining the Cyprus system on top of it is exactly the double coverage the EU rules exist to prevent3. Assuming the employer's declaration covers you. The ERGANI declaration is the employer's duty about the employment1; your social insurance number is your own registration via YKA 1-00812. Two different filings, and new arrivals routinely discover the second one late. Self-employed people waiting for an invitation. Nobody writes to a freelancer asking them to register. The obligation and the form YKA 1-008 sit with you12. Missing the quarterly payments. The three-month rhythm for self-employed contributions is easy to forget in the first year, when no payslip reminds you1. Treating social insurance and health contributions as one thing. They are collected under separate rules, and our [healthcare registration guide](/guides/gesy-registration) covers the health system's side.

FAQ

How long does it take to get a social insurance number? Usually within one to two weeks of submitting the application1. Do I need the number before my first working day? Your employer's ERGANI declaration must happen no later than one day before you start1, and the number application is a district-office filing you control; do it as soon as you have your identification documents rather than testing how late is too late1. What do the contributions actually buy? The scheme funds benefits including unemployment, sickness and maternity allowances and the statutory pensions1. Can I pay online? Yes, contributions can be paid over the internet through the payment service linked from the Social Insurance Services site2. I am a cross-border or multi-country worker. Which system am I in? The EU rule is one system at a time, generally the country where you work, with specific rules for postings and multi-country patterns3. Get the A1 question answered before you register anywhere, not after.
